Playa Bowls, the nation’s leading superfruit bowl shop, is preparing to open new corporate-owned locations in the Greater Toronto Area at The Well in downtown Toronto and near CF Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke.
The downtown Toronto location is scheduled to open in early May 2026, according to Retail Insider. Eat Up Canada Inc., the master franchisee for Playa Bowls in Canada, is currently constructing both locations and hiring staff. WhatNow previously reported on the company’s Canadian launch, noting its plans to introduce the health-focused superfruit brand to multiple markets nationwide. Customers can expect signature acai, pitaya, coconut, and green bowls, as well as smoothies and customizable toppings in a bright, vibrant environment.
Founded in 2014 in Belmar, New Jersey, Playa Bowls has grown into a U.S. brand with nearly 350 locations across 27 states. The Canadian expansion represents the brand’s first international growth and is part of a broader plan to develop more than 160 units across the country under a master franchise agreement with Eat Up Canada Inc.
Eat Up Canada was founded by George Heos and Alex Gerzon, who previously scaled Firehouse Subs to 50 Canadian locations and launched other concepts, including Pokeworks and Mighty Bird. The company is exiting two of its original brands to focus on higher-potential, scalable concepts like Playa Bowls and Pokeworks.
The Toronto and Etobicoke locations will be fully corporate-owned, giving Eat Up Canada complete operational control. The design emphasizes bright, modern interiors and an energetic atmosphere, aimed at attracting both quick lunch customers and health-conscious diners seeking an approachable, vibrant space.
With additional franchise locations planned for Vaughan, Ottawa, and Halifax, Eat Up Canada is targeting four to five new units in 2026. The company’s strategy focuses on operational execution, service consistency, and customer experience, drawing on lessons from the pandemic to offer a reliable, hospitality-driven concept across Canadian markets.
