A sweet new day is on the horizon for a DMV bakery and the fans who love it. Chimney Cake Bakery, a concept that lovingly crafts Hungarian kürtőskalács, is branching out from the smoke shop it’s been working out of and preparing to open its own brick and mortar in the Dulles Town Center next month, reports local media outlet The Burn.
Owner Antoine Lakis was kind enough to speak to What Now DC about bringing the unique titular treat to a new 21100 Dulles Town Circle, Suite 141 storefront, a process he explains started by seeing a void in the market. “I have a couple of friends that have the same business overseas.” Lakis says. “I did some surveys of the market, and I didn’t find any shops serving the same traditional Hungarian pastry.”
Kürtőskalács, the Hungarian pastry in question, is a sweet dough spiraled around a spit and baked into a cone. Guests at Chimney Cake Bakery can have the cone stuffed with delicious fillings like soft serve or pudding and decked out with an array of toppings.
Chimney Cake Bakery has had quite the journey from the seed of an idea to a full-blown storefront. Lakis describes the evolution, saying: “I bought the mix and I bought the oven and I started trial and error in my kitchen at home. After that, I have a friend who owns a smoke shop in Sterling and he offered me a spot to try the concept rent-free. After we went viral, we thought it’s the right time now to go ahead and get our own space, where it’s more kid and family friendly.”
The Dulles Town Center location should draw plenty of new customers to Chimney Cake Bakery. Lakis is optimistic that the retail plaza will prove an ideal spot to ensure success for his first brick-and-mortar. “Walk-in customers are very important to us, and the new owner of Dulles Town Center is very invested in bringing big names to the mall. We thought with this expansion and our concept-we have a prime location.”
Chimney Cake Bakery will primarily serve as a grab-and-go establishment. Lakis says that the mall has shared seating between his storefront and a Cinnabon. Old fans and future regulars alike will be excited to hear that Lakis and his team will be expanding the menu beyond the sweet cakes it already prepares so well. Lakis explains: “We’re going to introduce a savory menu as well. We’ll use the same cone but instead of being stuffed with something sweet we’ll have ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, and hot dogs.”
Sterling locals won’t have to wait too much longer to enjoy one of Chimney Cake Bakery’s distinctive and sumptuous treats; Lakis states that the storefront is getting its inspections completed this week and he is hopeful that the shop will be open and ready to serve customers between November 7th and 10th.
Future patrons should be sure to join Chimney Cake Bakery’s loyalty program, where they can earn a free cone for every 5 cones purchased. The company Instagram offers plenty of customer engagement and opportunities for amazing prizes, as well as all the relevant updates about the new location.
