Raise your glasses DMV wine enthusiasts, something exciting is on the horizon. Scott Shirley, a hospitality vet who knows a thing or two about a good glass of vino and the foods that complement it, is opening Chord Bread and Bottle in Alexandria this spring, reports local media outlet ALXNow.

Shirley is ensuring the 3690 J King Street storefront stays in the wine business; the space previously housed Unwined until its closure in late 2024. Still, the space will need to undergo renovations before beginning its next chapter as Chord Bread and Bottle’s home. Ultimately the shop will be able to accommodate up to 12 visitors.

Anticipated improvements include the construction of a pick-up counter, the installation of a prep kitchen and a window counter, alongside updating the bathrooms-no small feat.

Alexandria diners should be able to check out Chord Bread and Bottle’s fare by late April.

A notice posted on the building’s door offers future visitors a peak at what’s to come, saying: “We’re excited to become your new local spot for everyday provisions — thoughtful sandwiches made with good bread and honest ingredients, and a curated selection of wines to enjoy any day of the week. It’s never about excess — just simple things done right, the essentials elevated with ease, and always hitting the right note.”

Locals can rest assured that they are in good hands with Shirley behind the wheel. The restaurateur is also the mind behind Slaters Market and Union Sandwich Co., both concepts that echo Chord Bread and Bottle’s central ethos with gourmet sandwiches and “eclectic” selections of wine.
