A fresh new concept is bringing a taste of Africa to the DC dining scene in 2024. Eatopia Eatery will be introducing authentic Ethiopian cuisine to the District later this year, according to permits filed with the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration.

The restaurant will be opening at 1301 U Street , N.W., #111. The license application states that the building will be able to accommodate up to 76 customers.

Eatopia founder Surafel Gizachew spoke with What Now DC about introducing Eatopia to the area. “We were drawn to the vibrant cultural scene and rich history of U Street.” Gizachew states. “The area’s reputation for embracing diverse culinary experiences and its strong sense of community align perfectly with our vision for Eatopia.”

Eatopia is the culmination of considerable hard work and ambition. Gizachew explains “Eatopia has been a passion project in the making for over a year. The timing feels right now as we see a growing appreciation for Ethiopian cuisine and a desire for cultural experiences that go beyond just dining.”

In addition to delicious and authentic cuisine, the restaurant will provide a unique environment where guests can enjoy a range of art and culture. “We want every visit to Eatopia to be an immersive experience.” Gizachew says. ”Our space will be a hub for cultural exchange, with live music, storytelling, and art exhibitions that complement our delicious food. We also have dedicated plant-based Wednesdays where we serve strictly plant-based foods.”

Eatopia promises a distinctive and immersive menu, certain to delight long-time fans of Ethiopian cuisines and new-comers alike. Gizachew describes it, stating “Our menu is a celebration of Ethiopian cuisine, featuring traditional dishes like injera, tibs, and wot, prepared with authentic spices and flavors. We also offer a selection of vegan and vegetarian options to cater to a diverse range of dietary preferences. We have a specially curated menu for some of the biggest names from Ethiopia and Washington DC. It’s called ‘Inspire’ which will be revealed at the grand opening.”

DC residents can look forward to sampling Eatopia’s fare this spring. The eatery is hoping to soft open in April, with it’s grand opening schedule for Africa Day on May 25. The concept is currently finalizing its permits and completing construction.

The Eatopia team is striving to create the best dining experience possible. Gizachew states “Our team is working diligently to ensure that every detail of the restaurant reflects our vision for Eatopia.”
