Adams Morgan java fans still mourning the loss of Philz Coffee will soon be able to find comfort in a hot cup of joe from a fresh cafe. Compass Coffee is taking over the space that once housed Philz, reports local media outlet PoPville.

Signage has been hung at the 1827 Adams Mill Road, NW shop. The building most recently housed Foxtrot, which took over the space from Philz after its closure in 2023. While a precise opening date is not currently available, Compass appears to be moving relatively swiftly with its takeover; the detritus remaining from Foxtrot’s closure has only recently been removed from the location. However, the new cafe is not yet listed on the company’s website.

Compass Coffee opened its first location in DC in 2014. The cafe has expanded to include 18 locations across the DMV region. Founded by Marines Michael Haft and Harrison Suarez, the concept focuses on serving quality, ethically sourced coffee.
