The new Spanish restaurant is named after Ruben García’s great grandmother Teresa Espinosa Moreno, a labor rights activist.

Spanish restaurateur Rubén García is set to open Casa Teresa, a new restaurant and tapas bar, in September in downtown DC, marking his first solo project.

The Spanish restaurant will be part of an upcoming food hall called The Square, located at 1850 K Street NW, which is being established by Unfold Hospitality, a group that was co-founded by García and restaurateur Richie Brandenburg.

Casa Teresa will reflect the traditions of Catalonia and Basque Country and it will use oak charcoal to set live fire to prepare dishes of grilled meats and vegetables, according to Eater DC

“There’s no better way to go back to my roots than go back to the most basic style of cooking, which is fire. It’s challenging, fulfilling, and humbling as well,” García told Eater DC.

García works as the creative director at José Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup, the team behind various restaurant concepts that spread in Washington, DC, New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami, among other cities.

The new Spanish restaurant is named after García’s great-grandmother Teresa Espinosa Moreno, a labor rights activist.

“To put her name on the entrance comes with a big responsibility. We are still having to fight for equality for everyone [today],” he told Eater DC.

Casa Teresa’s tapas bar will feature spanish street food such as gambas al ajillo, croqueta de jamon, and tortilla de patatas.

What Now DC reached out to Rubén García by phone for comment and additional information.
