A pizza venture that debuted as a 20-foot takeout-only trailer in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly turned into a neighborhood favorite now seeks to expand its current space.

According to a permit application filed on May 25, 2023, Stracci Pizza owners Tom and Annalisa Cardarelli wish to expand the restaurant, located at 106 Hume Avenue in Potomac West.

In just over two years since it opened, Stracci Pizza has undergone many changes to accommodate its growing popularity. During its first month of business, Stracci Pizza operated out of the aforementioned trailer in a parking lot behind the old Bon Vivant Cafe on Mount Vernon Avenue, and it’s come a long way since.

In March 2021, the owners leased the building they’re currently in — previously occupied by Nectar Coffee and Wine Bistro — and its parking lot. In June 2021, the business received its liquor license and started selling classic cocktails, Italian wines and craft beers, in addition to food. Then in October of that year, the dining room opened and Stracci Pizza was able to offer indoor seating, marking “a major milestone” for the business.

Stracci Pizza has received many accolades since opening its doors, including being named to Eater DC’s list of essential pizza restaurants in D.C. and winning The Zebra Press’ 2022 Readers’ Choice Award for Best Pizza in Alexandria.

The menu changes seasonally and currently features six different personal pizzas, ranging from The Stracci, a simple pie made with the company’s namesake stracciatella cheese, tomato and basil, to The Brooklyner, which comes topped with pepperoni, sausage, ricotta, stracciatella, Calabrian chili and honey.

Stracci Pizza is also serving up starters, such as rosemary focaccia and meatballs, as well as several desserts, including a Marcona almond tart and tiramisu.

Guests can enjoy their meal in the dining room, on the patio or in the pizza garden. Takeout service is also offered.

No other details about the possible expansion are currently available. Stracci Pizza did not immediately respond to emails and phone calls from What Now Media.
