It’s been a tumultuous year for Merrifield donut fans looking forward to their next fix. Fortunately, after facing off against complicated site conditions, unexpected expenses, and near-eviction, Florida-based sweet shop, The Salty, is back on track for a Mosaic District storefront, reports local media outlet FFXNow.
The young and growing concept is setting up shop at 2905 District Avenue, Unit 180 in the space that housed the Loyal Companion pet store until its closure in 2023. The Salty originally hoped to open in the Mosaic District this summer, however following the myriad complications, it’s impossible to predict when the eatery will be ready for guests. Co-owner Andy Rodriguez offers some insight into the situation, saying: “The location will be moving forward as planned after a very difficult time with permitting and unexpected site conditions that drove the anticipated construction costs tremendously.”
The Salty began life as a pop-up, serving donuts from a camper. The brand became a chain built up of 16 storefronts. While the concept owes a great deal of its success to its commitment to creating welcoming atmospheres and a great coffee and tea program, it truly hangs its hat on the donuts.
The website explains what makes a The Salty donut so special, saying: “With unthinkable care and using nothing but the finest ingredients, we push the boundaries of what a donut can be and tell stories through our ever-changing menu of new flavors.”
Rodriguez and his wife and business partner, Amanda Pizarro, feel that the Mosaic District will be a good match for The Salty’s ethos and atmosphere. Rodriguez states: “The [Mosaic District]’s unique blend of creativity and community spirit makes it an ideal home for our brand.”
