All signs are pointing towards great news for DC pizza lovers. Via Roma, the DMV area’s first certified Pinseria, is opening a new location in Woodley Park and the signage is up to prove it, according to local media outlet PoPville.
The pizzeria will be bringing authentic Italian pies to 2606 Connecticut Avenue, NW, in the space that last housed District Kitchen. While a precise opening date is not yet available, co-owner Biagio Cepollaro confirms with What Now DC that he is targeting the end of February for Via Roma’s DC debut.
The concept sprung from a passion for great food shared by founders Biagio Cepollaro and Chef Tonino Topolino. The duo both hail from Naples, Italy and dedicated years to refining their culinary skills. They came together in 2020 to “create something special for the DMV”, and Via Roma was born.
The pizzeria originally set up shop in Camp Springs, Maryland, and rapidly earned rave reviews and a reputation as a refreshing and unique presence in the local dining scene. However, that location ceased operations in November of 2023, making Via Roma’s return to the DMV exciting news for anyone who’s been craving its distinctive pinsa.
“Pinsa” may be an unfamiliar word to even the most ardent pizza lovers; however the Via Roma website explains what precisely visitors have in store, saying “‘Pinsa’ comes from the word “Pinsere” which is Latin for pressed or flatten, and that happens to our dough that gets pressed Into an oval shaped, cloud-like crunchy and easy to digest pizza.”
Via Roma will be serving hot slices Monday through Friday, from 4pm to 10 pm, Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm, and Sunday from 11 am to 9 pm.
