Macy’s Inc. is shuttering its long-standing Greenbriar Mall location, the company — which owns Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s — announced this week alongside another 44 planned closures coast to coast, like its Santa Monica, CA Bloomingdale’s. An exact last day has not yet been announced, but Macy’s Greenbriar will likely close this quarter.
In early 2020 before the pandemic, Macy’s announced it planned on closing 125 stores across its portfolio by 2023. The company is releasing its closure list in spurts with the Greenbriar Mall location being among the latest bunch.
“As previously announced, Macy’s, Inc. is committed to rightsizing our store fleet by concentrating our existing retail locations in desirable and well-trafficked A and B malls,” Macy’s said in a prepared statement this week. “To that end, we announced several store closures today that align to the guidance we provided in February 2020. These closures bring us closer to achieving the right mix of mall-based stores.”
Greenbriar Mall is the only Georgia outpost included among the doomed 45 locations locally. As more announcements are expected now through the next few years, that could change, however. The space — the last remaining anchor for the soon-to-be-redeveloped mall – was home to Rich’s Department Store since 1965. Macy’s took over in 2005 when the Rich’s brand was absorbed by Macy’s.
The Trump Pandemic and the Trump Great Depression and the Trump Apocalypse continues
Huh? Not a Trump fan, but how is Macy’s closing an underperforming location any president’s fault? Brick and Mortar retail has been suffering for many years, much longer than this administration….
Just to be correct: Macy’s DID NOT take over Rich’s! Federated bought Macy’s. Closed existing Macy stores. Federated decided to take the Macy’s name and make it a National Department Store. Please get your facts correct!
I hate the fact that Macy’s is being removed from our Community. It is unfortunate that we have to go of our way to shop. A lot of us remember when it was the top place to shop when it was Rich’s. What can we do to save it. This is when we need a person with means or a celebrity to step up. Also, retirees and Seniors will suffer.
Does anyone know who is selling this property? I have some one who is interested in
leaseing it out? My email is [email protected]
