Texas-based Whataburger is preparing for a big year in South Carolina, planning to open at least ten new locations throughout the Upstate and Midlands.
The company plans to expand its presence into several cities in the state, including Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Mauldin, Irmo, Boiling Springs, Lexington, Duncan, and Easley, according to a news release. The closest one to Charlotte will be the two in Spartanburg at 1941 E Main Street and 1510 WO Ezell Boulevard, followed by another location in Greenville and Mauldin. All locations are expected to open sometime next year. All upcoming sites are listed below.
A few months ago, the company attempted to establish a new location in Greenville at 1601 Laurens Road, but Greenville’s Board of Zoning Appeals denied the request for the all-night drive-thru. Instead, the company will begin its South Carolina expansion with a new location in Greenville at 1466 Woodruff Road, opening next summer. Following this, the company is tentatively planning to open three locations in the summer of 2024, four locations in the fall of 2024, and an additional three in late fall.
“The proposed 24-hour drive-thru is expected to attract more business to the area at different times of the day than during normal business hours and leverage the rest of Greenville’s vibrant commercial area for businesses that may be open later as well,” according to the denied application submitted to the original proposed Greenville location.
