Public restaurant, a Zeeland staple, closed in December 2021 to make way for a development project to change the landscape of Main Avenue in Zeeland. Over two years later, construction officially began, and the building at 135 and 137 E. Main Ave has been demolished to make way for the Public’s future home. Public is anticipated to reopen in late spring or early summer this year.

Public is one of four restaurant concepts operated by 1983 Restaurants, a restaurant group established by Lucas Grill in 2021. Public follows the simple philosophy that “good food brings people together.” Its menu focuses on comfort food and serves various appetizers, fresh salads, and its iconic knife-and-fork “sandwiches.” The dinner menu also includes classic entry items such as pork chop, flat-iron steak, and fish fry.

The development project included an expanded Moxy Dental, eight new residential units, and a public tunnel walkway connecting Main Avenue to parking behind the building. The project is expected to be fully complete this fall, but Public is anticipated to reopen in the late spring or early summer, according to Grill.
