Construction activities were seen at 9497 Lapeer Road in Davison Township this month. The building has remained vacant since its previous occupant, Big Boy, permanently closed two years ago. The incoming restaurant is El Cozumel Mexican Grill, which currently has a location in Burton, MI. This news was first seen in MLive.

Saul “Lalo” Rodriguez, owner of El Cozumel Mexican Grill, confirmed the upcoming second location with What Now Detroit over the phone. However, the doors won’t open until Spring 2025 as the team is completely renovating the former Big Boy building, making the project a major investment and highly time-consuming.

Located inside Burton’s Courtland Center mall, El Cozumel has been a local staple ever since it first opened in 2008. The restaurant has an extensive menu featuring appetizers, salads, tacos and burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas, combination plates, fajita chicken, specialty seafood items, American fusion options, and a kid’s lunch menu.
