A local Mexican eatery is cooking up a third location, breathing new life into a South Downtown building.
El Tesoro is planned for a space on Hotel Row at 171 Mitchell Street SW. The restaurant will feature indoor dining and a spacious outdoor patio, blending “El Tesoro’s signature rustic charm with elements inspired by the rich cultural history of the neighborhood,” according to South Downtown ATL.
The restaurant comes from Alan Raines. El Tesoro opened in Edgewood in 2019, starting as a 14-seat counter-service eatery before expanding to accommodate 175 people with large outdoor patio space. El Tesoro brought a second location of the concept to Atlanta’s West End at Wild Heaven Beer in 2023.
The menu includes street-style tacos, burritos, mulitas (described as a “supercharged quesadilla”), tamales and more.
“Our goal has always been to create something unique for Atlanta, an experience that transports you from wherever you are, to a small village in Mexico,” Raines said in a statement. “We can’t wait to create a space in South Downtown that will do just that.”
The new South Downtown location of El Tesoro will be down the street from fellow Mitchell Street businesses Spiller Park Coffee and Tyde Tate Kitchen. Delilah’s Everyday Soul is also set to open a full-service restaurant there.
The area has been undergoing revitalization as part of a project led by tech entrepreneurs and Atlanta Tech Village co-founders Jon Birdsong and David Cummings.
