Mike’s Red Tacos, a San Diego-born birria specialist founded by local Michael Touma, is preparing to open a new location in the Mira Mesa area at 9089 Mira Mesa Blvd.
The company’s third location is set to replace Tofu House, according to documentation submitted to the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality. Touma confirms the opening with What Now San Diego, but wasn’t able to comment on an opening date. Regardless, the move proves impressive for the company, which started as a food truck four years ago. When this new location opens, customers can expect the delicious birria-focused plates that the restaurant has become well-known for.
Mike’s Red Tacos offers a focused birria-based menu featuring slow-simmered beef served in various formats. Standout options include the classic birria tacos, corn tortillas dipped in chili oil and fried, served with consommé and available with cheese, as well as their signature Crunchstack, a layered tostada creation wrapped in a flour tortilla. Beyond tacos, customers can also enjoy birria ramen, burritos, quesadillas, loaded nachos and fries, veggie tacos, chips, churros, and a salsa bar, all offered at affordable prices.
Born in June 2021 as a Bay Park food truck, Mike’s Red Tacos opened its first brick-and-mortar in Clairemont Mesa in summer 2022, followed by a second location at Loma Square in Point Loma in May 2024. In 2023, Mike’s Red Tacos earned national recognition, ranking No. 52 on Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the U.S. and being the only taco shop to make that list. This will be an excellent location for a new Mike’s Red Tacos thanks to the steady traffic, nearby neighborhoods, and busy shopping spots. It’s a high-visibility area with numerous potential customers, making it an ideal fit for expanding the brand and attracting even more fans.
