New Mexican Restaurant Mexi Set to Launch in Financial District

Housed in a landmark building dating to the 1600s, Mexi draws inspiration from Mérida and Yucatán’s colonial homes, blending earthy materials with subtle nods to Catholic iconography.

The restaurant follows a “made-from-scratch” philosophy, featuring hand-pressed tortillas from imported organic corn masa, fresh salsas, chicken tinga, adobo and chipotle sauces, and churros.

Beverage Director José María curates an extensive selection of small-batch Mexican spirits, along with inventive cocktails and margaritas. The restaurant’s designs sport patterned tile floors, commissioned local art, and custom ironworks, giving it a romantic aesthetic.

Extensive Mexican Spirits Collections

Mexi boasts one of the city’s largest collections of Mexican spirits, with more than 400 bottles sourced from Jalisco, Durango, Guerrero, Puebla, and beyond. Curated by Chema, the bar program celebrates Mexico’s rich heritage of agave spirits.

The cocktail menu is designed as a deck of Mexican lotería, with each drink presented as an illustrated card featuring artwork, a story, and tasting notes. The deck, which has the likes of El Drácula, La Condesa and La Chona, comes alive through unexpected pairings.

Guests can enjoy options like chipotle with mezcal, yuzu with agave spirits, grapes with wine aperitifs, and cilantro with tequila. Some of the highlights also include rare and small batches of raicillas, bacanoras, tequilas, and mezcals.

Authentic Cuisine

Mexi’s menu is a tribute to the richness and diversity of Mexican cuisine. Inspired by culinary traditions from across Mexico, each dish highlights authentic, time-honored techniques.

At the heart of the menu are housemade tortillas made from organic heirloom Mexican corn masa through the traditional nixtamalization process.

Guests can also expect a rotating selection of fresh, seasonal salsas. Some of the standouts are slow-cooked carnitas, chicken tinga, and a variety of signature sauces, including traditional moles, adobo, and chipotle. For dessert, crispy churros are served with traditional dipping sauces like chocolate and cajeta.

With its deep-rooted respect for tradition and eye-catching beverage collection, Mexi is set to become a go-to spot in Manhattan.
