Turkish Restaurant in Orange County Closed After Pest and Sanitation Violations

Halaloglu was cited for multiple health code violations, including cockroach activity in critical areas, and has been ordered to shut down.

The Orange County Health Care Agency conducted a health inspection at Halaloglu on Wednesday, September 17. The restaurant was cited for several health code violations, including the presence of cockroaches and unsanitary conditions. Inspectors directed the restaurant to provide a pest control report prior to scheduling a reinspection.

The report mentioned that not all food handlers had a valid California Food Handler Card available at the time of inspection. The health inspectors observed a large metal cart blocking access to the handwash station.

Old food residues were seen accumulated on the food presser component and the underside of the blade of the unused deli slicer. The report also noted the accumulation of a green residue on the inside of the ice chute at the soda station.

Health inspectors observed live and dead cockroaches in the facility. A live cockroach was found on the floor in front of the cold-top reach-cooler by the front counter. Live and dead cockroaches were found on the floor underneath the 3-comp sink drainboard.

Dead cockroaches were observed on the floor in the corners behind the soda station at the front counter, under the fryer, cooking equipment at the cook’s line, and on the floor in the restroom. An egg case was found on the floor beneath the grill top at the cook’s line.

The eatery was instructed to seal cracks and crevices along the base cove, walls, and ceiling tiles, and remove all clutter and cardboard to eliminate harborage sites. Inspectors noted missing labels on squeeze-bottle food containers at the cook’s line.

Inspectors found no quaternary ammonium test strips on site. The health inspectors observed gaps and holes in the metal panel where the soda lines extend to the left of the cook’s line. There were gaps in the metal panel of the electrical outlet box next to the soda station.

The report noted that the accumulation of food debris was observed in multiple areas throughout the facility, including under the cold top 2-door reach-in coolers, beneath the 3-door upright cooler and freezer, around the floor sink below the 3-compartment sink, and under the dry storage and utensil racks.

Follow-up Inspection

Health inspectors immediately suspended Halaloglu’s health permit and ordered the restaurant to close. The establishment has been instructed to correct all listed violations prior to reinspection.

A pest control service must be completed, and a receipt must be available for review by the health department. Once all corrective actions have been taken, Halaloglu may request a reinspection by contacting the local health department.
