Philadelphia Café Cited for Multiple Health Violations in Latest Inspection

A health inspection conducted on November 14 identified multiple violations at Luna Cafe. The Philadelphia health department reported that food items were left uncovered and that dust and grime had accumulated throughout the facility.

According to the health inspection report, Luna Cafe was cited for multiple health-code violations. Some of these violations are as follows:

  • The report noted that no person with a valid Philadelphia Food Establishment Personnel Food Safety Certificate was present at the time of inspection. The person in charge only held a ServSafe certificate.
  • An open beverage container used by an employee was observed on the prep counter. The violation was corrected on-site.
  • A handwashing reminder sign was posted above the three-bay ware-washing sink. It was corrected on-site.
  • Several expired containers of lime juice and two containers of expired milk were found in the reach-in refrigerator. The items were discarded and the violation was corrected on-site.
  • Uncovered batter and ready-to-eat foods were stored beneath raw bacon and chicken in the cold prep unit.

  • The report noted that cutting boards had deep scratches and scoring, preventing proper cleaning.
  • Raw, unfinished wood wall surfaces were observed in the ware-washing area.
  • Dust, grime, and debris were observed on lower shelving surfaces throughout the food-prep area, said the report.
  • Brooms were stored on the floor instead of being hung when not in use.
  • Grime, grease, and food debris were present along the floor edges in the prep area. Dust and debris were also observed along floor perimeters in the rear ware-washing and side storage areas. They were also found between equipment in the beverage-prep area.
  • The report noted that the hood filters contained an accumulation of static dust and grease.

Follow-up Inspection

According to the health inspection report, Luna Cafe is expected to secure a food safety certificate and submit its application and fee within 30 days of the inspection. The eatery needs to correct the violations mentioned to avoid revocation of its health license and other legal action.
