MML Hospitality’s sushi concept Neighborhood Sushi is a “trendy Japanese eatery specializing in sushi rolls, nigiri & sashimi, plus unique cocktails & sake.” It’s been open for several years at 1716 Congress Ave, and in that time it has built quite a following.

“Neighborhood sushi is an underrated gem in Austin. The fish is OUTSTANDING and the presentation is gorgeous. I am always impressed with the service and how knowledgeable the staff is,” says one 5-star review on Yelp by Kimberly W.

The word gem appears in other Neighborhood Sushi reviews as well, like this one by Megan C., also giving 5 stars: “One of my absolute favorite spots in Austin! This swanky little gem off South Congress feels like you’ve been transported to a hidden sushi speakeasy just steps from the main drag. You slip in through an unmarked back door off the parking lot and find yourself in a cool, romantic, dimly lit space.”

Now, Neighborhood Sushi is up to something new not far from its original Congress Avenue location. Permitting paperwork submitted to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation shows renovation plans for a 4,000-square-foot space, which will become a new Neighborhood Sushi.

Recent coverage by the Austin Business Journal says the renovation is estimated to cost $500,000.

The dinner menu at Neighborhood Sushi includes shareables like Grilled Edamame, Yellowtail Tartare, and Baja Bass Yakitori. For the main event, the brand’s sushi rolls, choices include Yellowtail Scallion, with jalapeno and ponzu; Legacy Farms Wagyu (tartare, shiitake, spicy teriyaki), and Snow Crab, with avocado, cucumber, and wasabi tobiko.

Opening in the First Street space, a new Neighborhood Sushi would be situated just across from Elizabeth Street Cafe.
