Philadelphia Pub Cited for Multiple Health Violations in Latest Inspection

Health inspectors with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health conducted a routine inspection at Strangelove’s on January 5. According to the inspection report, the establishment was cited for several food safety violations.

Strangelove’s is a pub known for offering craft beer on 20 taps paired with dishes like wings, burgers, and tacos. The inspection report documented the following violations:

  • Paper towel dispensers were empty at handwash sinks in the bar, kitchen prep area, and back warewash area. There was no soap kept at these sinks. A trash can had blocked the handwash sink in the bar, and the prep-area handwash sink contained dishes and basins.
  • The report said new application for the Food Safety Certificate was issued. Four food employees were seen eating in the kitchen prep area.
  • Food stored in the cold prep and undercounter refrigerators was uncovered. Raw eggs were observed stored on an upper shelf above ready-to-eat food.
  • The inspection report stated black residue and pink slime were observed inside the ice machine bin
  • Ready-to-eat food that was held for more than 48 hours in the refrigerator was not date-marked. Opened, commercially processed, ready-to-eat foods were also missing opening dates.
  • Containers were seen without proper labels identifying their contents.
  • Food was seen stored directly on the floor in the walk-in cooler, and beverages were kept on the floor in the basement storage area. Moist wiping cloths were found lying on counters instead of being kept in a sanitizing solution.
  • The report noted that clean dish racks were stored on the floor, and dishes were not properly inverted. Cutting boards were seen with deep scratches and scoring, preventing effective cleaning.
  • All sinks and the dishwasher required resealing to adjoining walls. Inoperable reach-in refrigeration units were observed in the basement and kitchen areas, with one unit being used as storage.

  • The report said the facility did not have sanitizer test strips to monitor its concentrations.
  • The interior of the bar chest refrigerator had rusted shelves in reach-in units, dust accumulation on fan guards, and ice buildup in freezers.
  • Cardboard was seen stored in the basement freezer, with heavy dust on window sills, shelves, ledges, and equipment, and rust, debris, and spillage on lower refrigeration units and prep tables.
  • Grease and oil accumulation were observed on all cooking equipment.
  • A faucet was missing at the warewash sink. Trash and refuse areas outside the facility needed cleaning, as per the report.
  • Debris and grease buildup were present under and behind equipment in the kitchen and bar areas. It was also present in the walk-in cooler and basement storage.
  • Chipped paint was observed in storage and prep areas, with missing floor tiles behind the bar. Cleaning tools such as brooms, dustpans, and mops were stored on the floor.
  • Defective lighting was observed in the kitchen prep reach-in refrigerator and undercounter refrigerator behind the bar. There was inadequate lighting in the basement storage area.

According to the inspection report, the restaurant is expected to correct the violations ahead of reinspection. The inspection report states that failure to comply could result in enforcement action, including loss of the health license. The report noted that the facility must obtain a food safety certificate and submit an application within 30 days.
