Historic H.D. Gruene Mercantile Reopens in February

More than a century old, H.D. Gruene Mercantile is preparing to open its doors this February. Known as the “oldest new shop in town,” the mercantile aims to blend its long-standing heritage with a modern retail experience for both residents and visitors.

Located in the Gruene Historic District, the 6,500-square-foot building has been renovated while preserving its historic character. An official grand opening celebration is scheduled for February 17, 2026.

Susie Molak, wife of the late Pat Molak, shared her excitement about the reopening and said she looks forward to welcoming the community and visitors.

“H.D. Gruene Mercantile has always been part of Gruene’s story, and this reopening is about honoring that legacy while creating something that feels relevant, inspiring, and distinctly Texan,” added Susie Molak. “Visitors to Gruene can look forward to immersing themselves in the Mercantile’s rich history while perusing the original floors of the store.”

The retail store will feature a curated selection of gifts, apparel, accessories, and home goods sourced primarily from Texas-based makers. More than 70 local brands will be represented, reflecting the craftsmanship and independent spirit associated with the region.

Legacy of H.D. Gruene

Henry D. Gruene (1850–1920) played a central role in the Gruene District’s early development. He owned a large amount of land in the area, leasing farmland to sharecroppers and establishing businesses to support the growing community.

In 1878, Gruene opened a mercantile at what would become the center of town. The store quickly emerged as a commercial and social hub for local residents.

As the business expanded, a larger mercantile building was constructed on the site in 1904 and was named after Henry D. Gruene.

The upcoming reopening of H.D. Gruene Mercantile is set to carry forward its original role as a central gathering place while adapting to the needs of today’s shoppers.
