Following the closure of an Asian fusion restaurant, a new Japanese spot looks to be going in its place.
Signage has recently been put up in front of the building at 2 N River Street in downtown Aurora for Kai Japanese Kitchen. Not much is known about the concept, but it promises “waves of flavor” from a recent social media post. Construction is ongoing inside.
Leilani Asian Fusion first opened in the downtown area in August 2024 and had to close in July 2025 due to issues with funding the restaurant. It also reportedly went through a change in partnership. Their menu featured lunch and dinner options, including sashimi and nigiri. Beverages like boba teas, cocktails and beer were also available.
Kai’s menu has not been released, but those who visit the restaurant can expect sushi rolls, sashimi and ramen. It is described as a “modern Japanese kitchen” on social media.
The storefront is at the corner of N River Street and W Galena Boulevard, next to Touche French Creole. Giardino Trattoria & Pizzeria is also one storefront down. This is close to Stolp Island, an entertainment area which features the Paramount Theater and Hollywood Casino Aurora.
The owner is listed as Jay Punukollu. What Now Chicago has reached out to Punukollu, and this article may be updated.
