Wawa, the Pennsylvania-based convenience store and gas station known for its friendly rivalry with Sheetz, is preparing to open a new location in New Jersey.

The fast-casual spot, which recently broke ground, will open at 3400 New Jersey Ave. in Wildwood in the former Rite Aid space, bringing a unique twist, according to Wildwood Video Archive.

Unlike other Wawa locations, the 6,000-square-foot outpost will showcase a “doo-wop” style, featuring retro-inspired signage and bold design elements reflecting Wildwood’s historic character. The site will also include multiple fuel dispensers.

Wawa opened its first store in Folsom in 1964, followed by locations in New Jersey and Delaware in 1969.

Wawa’s menu offers its classic made-to-order sandwiches, fresh hoagies and salads, along with breakfast staples such as sandwiches, burritos and oatmeal. The chain helped secure the hoagie’s status as Philadelphia’s official sandwich and launched a dinner menu in 2021, introducing the Wawa Burger and Wawa Pizza, according to the website.

The chain also offers hot and cold beverages, including coffee, specialty drinks and smoothies, plus snacks and packaged goods for grab-and-go convenience. Seasonal and limited-time items round out the menu, emphasizing customizable options for a quick, casual meal.

Today, Wawa operates more than 1,000 convenience stores across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, the DMV area, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia and Ohio.

No official opening date has been announced as the site remains in early development. Visit the Wawa website or follow along on Instagram and Facebook for updates on the build-out and grand opening.
