Katz’s Never Kloses has a long history in Austin, serving the area for more than thirty years. However, it has now been absent for about 14 years, operating several locations in Houston but none in the Austin area. Now, that absence will soon come to a close, as Austin Texas Things reported back in December.
Even better: Katz’s is reopening in its original home, at 618 West Sixth Street.
“The original Katz’s opened in 1979 and quickly became the heart of West 6th’s nightlife scene, a role chronicled by local outlets like the Austin American‑Statesman and Austin Business Journal,” said the Austin Texas Things coverage. “It stayed packed until 2011, when Marc Katz closed the restaurant after financial struggles and ongoing parking issues that eventually led to a bankruptcy filing. Since then, Austin has changed dramatically—but the appetite for Katz’s never went away.”
Now under new leadership—that of Barry Katz, son of founder Marc Katz, and his wife Lisa, who operated several Katz’s Never Kloses locations in Houston—the brand is plotting its comeback after buying the property at a bankruptcy auction.
That means Austin will soon be able to enjoy, 24-hours-a-day, the deli’s famous sandwiches. These have included The Reuben, Katz’s Pride (Corned beef, Russian dressing, and coleslaw), the Three Stooges (Corned beef, pastrami, turkey breast, and Swiss cheese with spicy brown mustard), the Shea Stadium (Grilled turkey-ham [turkey cured liked ham] & Swiss cheese), and more. Details on the menu to be offered when Katz’s returns to Austin are not yet available.
What Now reached out on Friday to a representative of Katz’s Never Kloses. The representative was not immediately available for comment.
