Since debuting in Covington in 2023, Nacho Kat has built a following with its signature take on Tex-Mex. The full-service restaurant is now preparing to launch its first New Orleans location at 3151 Calhoun St. The upcoming Uptown outpost is expected to bring Nacho Kat’s quirky energy and highly-rated nacho platters.

Co-owner Oscar Martinez recently told What Now New Orleans that the new location will have signature Nacho Kat items and a few dishes that are unique to the new location.

“The core base of the menu remains the same across (both locations), but it will also be a fun menu that we will evolve,” he said. “For example, we do Birria Tacos, but we also incorporated a Birria Po-boy, which is technically a roast beef po-boy but with different flavors.”

The same combination of signature and unique items extends to the bar. In addition to staples like margaritas and mojitos, the New Orleans location will have signature drinks inspired by Crescent City drinking culture.

Even though the signature item at Nacho Kat is a Tex-Mex dish, Martinez emphasized that Nacho Kat is not a strictly Mexican restaurant

“We are considered Latin American because I get inspired by all Latin American countries,” he said. “What most people know is Mexican food, so we decided to utilize Mexican-inspired dishes but twist it our way by utilizing Latin American cuisine from the Dominican Republic, Peru, Honduras, Brazil, and Puerto Rico.

“That is what separates us from most,” he added.
