ECU Health Home Health and Hospice will lay off 161 employees at its facility in Greenville. The company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice with the state. The layoffs follow the shutdown of the Greenville facility.

ECU Health Announced to Close a Greenville Facility

ECU Health Home Health and Hospice filed a WARN notice indicating the closure of its facility at 1005 WH Smith Blvd, Greenville, NC 27834. As a result of the closure, the layoffs are scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2026.

The Greenville site offers home health and hospice services, taking care of patients requiring medical care, rehabilitation services, or end-of-life services at home.

According to Business North Carolina’s report, the shutdown relates to ECU Health’s strategy to sell its home health and hospice operation to Liberty Home Care and Hospice.

According to Brian Floyd, ECU Health’s chief operating officer, the move ensures long-term sustainability of services. Healthcare providers are facing financial pressures and evolving reimbursement models in the home-based care market.

“This decision was made with sustainability and continuation of services at the forefront. Liberty Home Care and Hospice brings the scale, expertise, and mission‑driven focus needed to help ensure uninterrupted high‑quality home health and hospice care for patients and families who depend on these services,” added Floyd.

Both organizations indicated that the transition will be smooth and will not disrupt patient care. Employees may also have opportunities to transition into roles under Liberty’s staffing model.

ECU Health’s Regional Healthcare Network

ECU Health is based in Greenville, North Carolina, and serves communities in the eastern parts of the state. The company runs hospitals and specialty care facilities, which offer services in trauma, pediatric care, and rehabilitation, as well as hospice services.

It has a network that serves millions of residents in 29 counties, and thousands of healthcare professionals work in hospitals, physician practices, wellness centers, and community programs.

The home health and hospice programs include skilled nursing, therapy, palliative support, and bereavement counseling for the families.

Although the Greenville closure will affect employees, the shift to Liberty Home Care and Hospice is aimed at preserving access to essential home health and hospice services for patients throughout eastern North Carolina.
