Phil’s BBQ is planning its first Arizona location at 3440 W Chandler Blvd, according to an application filed with the city. President and CEO Kevin Sheehan told Whatnow Phoenix that the company does not yet have an opening timeline.
The restaurant would take over a former Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant space, with a full renovation planned for the 10,107-square-foot building.
The project calls for a complete overhaul of the interior and updates to the exterior, including a new wood-framed entry facade and the addition of a back-of-house equipment yard.
Sheehan said the brand sees Chandler as a natural next step as it enters the Arizona market.
“We think it’s a great community and just a spot that will be a great addition for us,” he said. “We’re excited to join the Arizona market and look forward to our expansion as we continue to grow the brand.”
The move is part of a broader expansion outside California as the company continues to grow its footprint in new markets.
Founded in 1998 in San Diego by restaurateur Phil Pace, Phil’s BBQ is known for its mesquite-grilled ribs, chicken and signature barbecue sauce, and currently operates five locations across Southern California, including a presence at San Diego International Airport.
Asked what customers in the Valley can expect, Sheehan highlighted the brand’s approachable take on barbecue and its focus on everyday dining.
“Our barbecue is a style of barbecue that can be eaten every day. It’s not overly smoked, it’s very affordable and really just a great family environment,” he said.
Customers can follow the brand’s social media channels for updates as the project progresses.
