Moniker Coffee, the San Diego based cafe brand known for its coffee shops and community driven spaces, is preparing to open a new location in downtown San Diego at 1101 Union Street.

The company recently submitted permit documents to the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality for the new cafe location. While an exact opening date has yet to be announced, the company acknowledged the project when asked by What Now San Diego, but could not provide additional details at this time. Customers can likely expect a menu centered around espresso drinks, cold brew, tea offerings, and light cafe fare similar to the company’s existing concepts.

The new downtown location would further expand Moniker Coffee’s growing presence across San Diego County. The company currently operates Moniker Coffee at Liberty Station, as well as locations at The Craft Creamery in Point Loma and Moniker General Outpost in North Park. Each location blends coffee service with a community-focused atmosphere and locally driven design elements.

Moniker has steadily expanded its footprint in recent years through both standalone cafes and mixed-use development partnerships. In 2023, the company opened Moniker General Outpost as part of The Waldorf redevelopment project in North Park, helping bring new activity to the revitalized property on University Avenue. The concept combined Moniker Coffee with curated retail offerings under the broader Moniker Group umbrella.

This will be an excellent landing space for Moniker Coffee, considering the continued residential growth and office activity taking shape throughout downtown San Diego. The Union Street corridor places the cafe near apartment developments, hospitality projects, and daily commuter traffic, which could support steady demand throughout the week.

Founded in San Diego, Moniker Group has developed several hospitality, retail, and design concepts throughout the region. Along with its coffee operations, the company has become known for creating community-centered gathering spaces that combine food, beverage, retail, and design under one brand family.
