Nestled along Rosewood Avenue in East Austin, Rosewood Social Club was created to be more than just another neighborhood restaurant. The family-owned concept combines scratch-made food, craft cocktails, and an inviting atmosphere designed to bring people together, whether they’re stopping in for breakfast, lunch, dinner, live music, or simply a drink on the porch. Open daily, the restaurant embraces a relaxed philosophy with no dress code, no reservations, and plenty of room for regulars and newcomers alike.

For owner Terrell “TJ” Chiquete, opening Rosewood Social Club at 1309 Rosewood Avenue was the culmination of years spent working throughout the hospitality industry.

“I’ve been in the food industry since I started flipping burgers at 15 at Jack in the Box,” TJ tells What Now Austin in an exclusive interview. “I started bartending to pay for college, ran a Michelin-star restaurant in my 20s, then realized I was already doing my dream job after I graduated from college.”

Although he earned a college degree, TJ discovered that hospitality had already become his calling. Years of experience in restaurants gave him the confidence to eventually create a place of his own, one rooted in the neighborhood he now calls home.

The inspiration for Rosewood Social Club came from a desire to invest in the surrounding community. After purchasing a house just over a mile away, TJ and his wife saw an opportunity to create a gathering place where neighbors could connect over great food and drinks.

“My wife and I bought a house a mile or so away,” he says. “We wanted to establish a restaurant, bar, and hangout where we could give back to our community.”

That community-focused vision aligned perfectly with the property they eventually chose. The spacious outdoor area immediately stood out, offering the setting they imagined people would naturally gravitate toward.

“We loved the huge outdoor space, and the giant oak tree in the backyard spoke to us,” TJ says. “Plus, plenty of parking helps.”

Today, that welcoming atmosphere serves as the backdrop for Rosewood Social Club’s menu of scratch-made dishes and craft cocktails. Inspired by the laid-back spirit of Barton Springs, the restaurant encourages guests to slow down, connect, and enjoy good company in an approachable setting. Whether customers come for the lo mein, the live music, or to relax on the porch, the goal is to create an experience that turns first-time visitors into regulars.

Like many independent restaurant owners, TJ says opening the business has been filled with highs and lows.

“A rollercoaster of emotions,” he says. “One day you rule the world; the next day you are the biggest failure. The typical entrepreneurial day.”

The uncertainty of those first weeks proved especially challenging, as the team waited to see how many guests would walk through the doors.

“Not knowing how many people are coming through the doors those first few opening weeks” was the most difficult part of launching the restaurant, TJ says.

Despite the inevitable challenges, the rewards have made the journey worthwhile. For TJ, success isn’t measured only by sales or growth but by the experiences created for every guest who visits. “Making people smile through great food, drink, and experiences,” he says, “is the most rewarding part of opening a business.”

That philosophy continues to shape Rosewood Social Club’s identity as a true neighborhood gathering place. Every aspect of the concept, from its relaxed atmosphere to its scratch-made menu and craft cocktails, is intended to encourage people to gather, linger, and feel at home.

While TJ acknowledges the concept could potentially grow beyond East Austin one day, expansion is not the current priority.

“Maybe one day Rosewood Social Club might be considered scalable to other neighborhoods,” he says. “But right now our focus is on Rosewood.”

For now, that means continuing to serve the neighborhood that inspired the restaurant in the first place. As a family-owned business, TJ hopes guests recognize the importance of supporting independent operators who are deeply connected to the communities they serve.

“We are as mom-and-pop and as local as it gets,” he says. “If you truly want to support small Austin businesses, look no further.”

With decades of hospitality experience behind it and a vision centered on community, Rosewood Social Club has become exactly the kind of place TJ and his wife set out to create, a welcoming neighborhood destination where people can gather over scratch-made food, handcrafted cocktails, and genuine hospitality. As the restaurant continues to grow alongside East Austin, its focus remains unchanged: bringing people together and giving the community a place they can call their own.
