Costco Wholesale is planning its first location in Johnston County, with plans recently submitted to the Town of Clayton for a new warehouse at 12649 Clayton Boulevard, according to the Triangle Business Journal.
Plans call for a roughly 166,000-square-foot membership warehouse along with a 24-pump gas station. The proposed store would anchor West Edge, an approximately $100 million mixed-use shopping center being developed by Ohio-based commercial real estate company Casto. As previously reported by the Triangle Business Journal, Casto acquired the 87-acre development site for more than $23 million last month.
The proposal follows another major retail commitment at West Edge. According to the Triangle Business Journal, Target recently purchased an 11-acre parcel within the development, paving the way for its first store in Clayton.
According to Costco’s website, the company operates hundreds of membership warehouses worldwide, offering groceries, fresh food, pharmacy services, fuel, optical care, home goods, electronics and other products. Founded in 1983, the retailer has expanded to dozens of markets across the U.S., including 10 locations in North Carolina.
If the proposal moves forward, the Clayton warehouse would give Johnston County its first Costco location while further expanding the retailer’s footprint in one of North Carolina’s fastest-growing regions.
