Wawa could be one step closer to opening its first Pender County location after a property near the intersection of U.S. 17 and Sloop Point Loop Road in Hampstead was recently acquired by an LLC tied to one of the convenience chain’s North Carolina development partners.

According to the Triangle Business Journal, Pender County deed records showed that the LLC purchased nearly four acres from Renovation Church for $3.5 million earlier this month. The publication reports that the entity is linked to commercial real estate developer Capital Growth Buchalter, which has been involved in developing multiple Wawa locations across North Carolina.

While plans for the Hampstead site have not been officially confirmed, the project would mark Wawa’s first location in Pender County if it moves forward. The Triangle Business Journal reports that the nearest existing Wawa is in Wilmington, while no Charlotte-area stores have been publicly announced as part of the company’s North Carolina expansion.

According to Wawa’s website, the Pennsylvania-based company operates more than 1,200 convenience stores across the East Coast. The family- and associate-owned retailer is known for its freshly prepared built-to-order hoagies, breakfast sandwiches, salads, soups, coffee, handcrafted beverages, snacks and fuel services. Wawa has previously announced plans to open as many as 90 locations across North Carolina as it continues expanding its footprint across the state.
