Big things are happening for the samosa pop-up this year.
Locals of Ypsilanti will soon get a new Somali cuisine option as Samosa House is set to open at 16 S Washington Street this year. This will be a takeout-only location for now. The team is putting the finishing touches on the restaurant, and owner Khadija Hassan told What Now Detroit she is also planning a brick-and-mortar in the future.
Hassan started Samosa House in 2017 and has been serving the Somali cuisine staple to the community ever since. She participates in pop-ups and food events regularly, including the Ann Arbor Asian Night Market earlier this summer.
“(I’m) planning to grow, this is temporary,” Hassan said.
Hassan wants to provide as many vegetarian and vegan options as she can along with the meats. Popular dishes she has served in the past are salmon curry with grits, and of course the samosas. Their veggie samosa comes with potatoes, onions, carrots, peas and other spices, and the full menu can be found on their website.
The restaurant will be right in downtown Ypsilanti, sharing space with Ypsilanti Farmers MarketPlace. Ypsilanti Thrift Shop and Tanduri Korner are on the same side of the street, and this is near the W Michigan Avenue intersection.
For the takeout location, the final inspection is this Thursday, and if all goes well the team will be announcing the official grand opening date next week. More updates can be found on their Facebook page.
