A historic American restaurant, famously known for its homemade half-pound burgers, is preparing to shut down. After 70 years in Glenview, Hackney’s on Lake will close its doors in early September. The team plans to focus its efforts on the restaurant’s sister location, Hackney’s on Harms.
Lake Avenue Location of Hackney’s Set to Close
Located at 1514 E Lake Ave, Glenview, Illinois, Hackney’s on Lake is a long-running suburban staple. It offers a classic American nostalgic dining experience in a casual neighborhood setting.
The restaurant menu focuses on American comfort food, char-broiled burgers, and a selection of appetizers. The restaurant also offers a kids’ menu, patio seating, and a full bar.
It became a local favorite because of its signature Hackneyburgers that are served on dark rye bread and a “brick” of French fried onions.
The restaurant announced the closure in an Instagram post. The Hackney’s team stated that in early September, the restaurant will close its Lake Avenue location permanently.
Reflecting on the restaurant’s journey in the location, the restaurant team mentioned, “Since 1955, this building on Lake has served up Hackneyburgers, French-Fried Onions, and a whole lot of Glenview memories.”
The team acknowledged that the decision was difficult and said, “700-seat restaurant made sense in the 1960s — it doesn’t in 2026.”

Focus Shifts to Harms Location
The sister restaurant, located near Harms Woods, is the original location founded by Jim Masterson. Hackney’s on Harms was established in the 1940s and has been carrying the family legacy.
“This will let us focus on creating an excellent customer experience at our Harms location, where our exciting renovations will be complete,” said the team.
The restaurant has not shared any specific date for its closing. The team thanked the community for its support and love over the decades.
As Hackney’s on Lake enters its final chapter, the team encourages the community members to visit and enjoy one more meal. The closure will mark the end of a long and iconic journey of dining in the community.
