Baker’s Main Street Furniture has announced plans to close after more than 100 years serving customers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The family-owned furniture retail business has already begun its final liquidation sale.
Baker’s Main Street Furniture to Close Permanently
According to the company announcement, the longtime retailer is shuttering for good after serving customers across the Dallas-Fort Worth area for over a century.
Baker’s Main Street Furniture’s beginnings go back to 1923 when it opened as a hardware and general shop in Wylie, Texas. Founded by August Marvin “A.M.” Baker, the business moved to Garland in 1932, widening its offerings to include furniture.
The Baker family later expanded the store into a three-story showroom that became a longtime fixture in downtown Garland. Over the years, it served a range of home furnishings to generations of local customers. Some items include living room furniture, kitchen tables and chairs, bedroom sets, home accessories, mattresses, and more.
Closure Tied to Owner’s Retirement
The store was under the Baker family’s ownership for three generations. F.K. Baker, the son of A.M. Baker, became the owner in 1946 following his return from the U.S. Navy during World War II. James Baker later took over ownership in 1980 and led the business for nearly three decades.
Baker’s Main Street Furniture again faced an ownership change in 2009 when James’ brothers, David and John Baker took charge. David is now preparing to retire, prompting the decision to close the business.
“It has been nothing short of a privilege and honor for the Baker family to be part of this community for more than 100 years and serve generations of families,” David said.
Liquidation Sale is Currently Underway
The press release shows that its final liquidation sale is currently in progress at 524 Main St. The Garland community can find discounts on a wide selection of furniture, mattresses, and accessories.
The liquidation sale includes products from brands including Barcalounger, Corsicana, Best Home Furnishings, Crestview Collection, Massoud, Legacy Home, Mayo, Southern Motion, and Southerland.
Alongside the merchandise liquidation, the furniture company is also selling its 16,000-square-foot building at 524 Main St.
The Garland community now has a final opportunity to stop by at the store before the retailer shuts down.
