Lids is returning to San Francisco’s Union Square, with a new store planned for 50 Powell St. The sportswear retailer is expected to open the location in November 2026, according to building permits reported by The San Francisco Standard.

The upcoming store will mark Lids’ return to Union Square after the company closed its previous location in the neighborhood about three years ago. The retailer operates stores across the United States and specializes in licensed sports merchandise, with products representing professional and collegiate teams.

According to Lids’ website, the retailer carries a broad selection of hats, including fitted caps, snapbacks, adjustable hats, trucker hats and beanies, as well as sports jerseys, shirts and other merchandise. Its assortment includes products from major professional sports leagues and college teams.

The company also offers customization services at some locations, allowing customers to personalize select merchandise. Lids currently operates another San Francisco location at San Francisco Centre, although the mall closed earlier this year. The company’s website lists that store at 865 Market St., SPC20.

The new Union Square store comes as the downtown neighborhood sees renewed retail activity. Recent announcements and filings have included new or returning retailers, with businesses including Nintendo and Kith joining existing stores in the area.

The 50 Powell Street location places Lids near the heart of Union Square’s retail district, within walking distance of Union Square Plaza and the Powell Street transit hub.

Lids has not yet announced additional details about the new store’s size, hours or grand-opening plans.
