A longtime Massachusetts coffee shop has officially shut down. Simon’s Coffee Shop poured its last cup of coffee after 23 years of service. The coffee shop shared the closure announcement on social media.

Simon’s Coffee Shop Bids Farewell

Located in the heart of the Porter Square area, Simon’s Coffee Shop was a local staple for coffee and small bites. The cozy and aesthetically pleasing coffee shop became popular for its house-baked pastries and 2000s nostalgic vibe.

Through an Instagram post, the coffee shop team shared the closure announcement. After 23 years of operation, Simon’s closed its curtains. The restaurant team had posted, “Our last day at 1736 Mass Ave will be Monday, August 31st.”

According to a 10 Boston news report, owner Simon Yu plans to reopen the coffee shop at 1741 Massachusetts Avenue. However, an agreement for the new space had not been finalized at the time of the report. The report also mentioned that the current coffee shop space will be torn down as a new mixed-use development will be built there.

Community Responses

Following the closure announcement, several longtime customers of the coffee shop were disappointed and expressed their appreciation. One of the regular customers said, “Simon’s no! Such a classic staple of Cambridge! Simon’s such a wonderful man; he created a warm, inviting cafe with good coffee! Such great memories working there years ago during school!”

Some of the community members also shared heartfelt messages in the comments under the post. A customer wrote, “When my kids weren’t in school, I came into your coffee shop every single day when we first moved to Boston. Everyone working at Simon’s was always so friendly and lovely to see. I’m so sad you are closing down. Hopefully you are moving somewhere else and we can come visit you still.”

While Simon’s has closed its 1736 Massachusetts Avenue location, the team assured that it is not a permanent goodbye. The coffee shop plans to reopen soon at a nearby location.
