East Market is preparing to open at 35 N. Filbert St. in Stockton, with owner Akram Abozaid expecting the doors to open sometime next year. The new grocery store is taking over the space that was home to Los Altos Family Market, which has closed.
Abozaid plans to run it as a traditional neighborhood grocery, stocked with American and Mexican products. She said the Mexican items are a natural fit because of the customers and friends he has worked with over the years. “I plan to sell American products and Mexican products, because I know a lot of people from Mexico, and I deal with a lot of them,” Abozaid confirmed to What Now Sacramento. “There’s a part of me that belongs to Mexico. I don’t know why.”
The final product lineup is still taking shape. Abozaid is also considering adding a check-cashing service to the store. East Market is not Abozaid’s first store. He owns a liquor store and is a partner in Salaam Market, a grocery store. Her family has deep roots in the business, too. “My dad has been working with stores for more than thirty years,” Abozaid said.
That experience is a big part of why he’s opening another store. “I’m very excited to open another store,” she said. “I really love to continue with my dad’s legacy.”
The market will have a beer and wine license, which transferred over from Los Altos Family Market. That store held the license at this address starting in 2022. East Market is in Stockton, in San Joaquin County, on North Filbert Street.
