Workers at Republic National Distributing Company, LLC (RNDC) in Kentucky are facing an uncertain future as the company has initiated talks regarding the takeover of its facility in Louisville which could affect approximately 200 employees.
Ongoing Negotiations Warrant a Second Delay
Located at 2801 Blankenbaker Pkwy, the plant is one of several facilities that could be shuttered as the company contemplates selling.
In a second conditional notice dated October 9, RNDC revised the potential layoff timeline for employees at the Louisville facility while the proposed sale of its Kentucky assets moves through the approval process.
The notice leaves the status of the facility’s 206 employees uncertain as the transaction proceeds.
This most recent communication from RNDC comes after correspondence dated Aug. 19 informed workers that operations at the facility would cease on or around Oct. 1. Since, however, discussions with potential buyers are still in progress, RNDC executives filed a letter with its staff indicating that the employment deadline has been extended until the talks are completed. The newly revised dates delay any layoffs that would happen if the new ownership does not hire current workers for another two weeks, putting the furloughs into effect on or around Oct. 16.
In the letter to employees, the company instructed those who have concerns or questions to contact Human Resources representative Adam Kutzner.
Employees could be retained under new ownership or face layoffs, depending on the outcome of the transaction and staffing decisions. RNDC has not guaranteed that the buyer will retain the current workforce, so the notice outlines the potential for job losses if employees are not retained.
The Louisville notice comes as RNDC works through its Chapter 11 bankruptcy process and the sale of its remaining assets. The company has also announced workforce reductions at facilities in other states, including Colorado.
Republic National Distributing Company is a wholesale alcohol distributor in the state. It has served as a prominent facility capable of handling massive logistics.
Kentucky is well known for its spirits, specifically bourbon. The state produces 95% of the world’s bourbon, shuttering the RNDC facility would greatly impact distribution not only within Louisville, but in the state.
