History of the Bar
Scruffy Duffy’s was established in 1991 when siblings Pat and Eileen Hughes took over an existing bar on Eighth Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen. They renamed the bar Scruffy Duffy’s and built its presence in the neighborhood.
The business became known for its made-to-order pub food, particularly its Buffalo-style chicken wings. The original location was forced to close in February 2008 because of redevelopment around Times Square. In 2019, the owners brought Scruffy Duffy’s back at its current location on Tenth Avenue, restoring its neighborhood-bar atmosphere and signature wings.
The bar’s closure prompted disappointed reactions from several longtime customers in the neighborhood. A customer on Instagram commented, “Incredibly sad you all will be missed!”
Another customer wrote, “I feel like I was just stabbed in the chest repeatedly.”
The closure will mark the end of its current run as a neighborhood gathering spot.
