Z Bistro is preparing to open a restaurant in Midtown Sacramento, according to a state license application filed this week. The business applied on Oct. 21 to serve beer and wine with food at 2018 16th St., a building that has been home to Wing Fa Market. No opening date has been announced. The application lists Lily Liyun Zhou as president and Zi Wei Wu as a director of the company behind the restaurant, Z Bistro Corporation. The two are also its stockholders.
Wing Fa Market is a small Asian grocery with a takeout counter known for Chinese barbecue. Reviewers mention dishes like BBQ pork over rice, roast pork belly, Peking ribs, roasted duck and chicken chow mein, and online listings describe it as a neighborhood spot for low-priced lunches and take-out meals. Its listings still show it open, and it’s not clear whether the market is closing or the restaurant is planning to share the building.
The property is a two-story building from 1925, with a commercial space on the ground floor and a residential unit upstairs. It was recently listed for sale as a mixed-use property in Midtown, with a listing that points to the neighborhood’s growth and investment.
That growth has been visible along 16th Street, one of Midtown’s busiest north-south corridors, which connects the grid’s restaurant and bar district to the residential neighborhoods around it. Smaller, locally owned restaurants and bistros have continued to open in the area, many in older buildings like this one.
