pFriem Family Brewers is planning its first taproom in Portland, according to a city liquor license application. The Hood River brewery applied for a Full On-Premises Brewery license for a site at 2216 SE 50th Ave. in the Mt. Tabor area.

The site is currently Hinterland Bar and Food Carts, which opened in January 2022. The application describes a small neighborhood spot with about 30 seats indoors and 92 outdoors, open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the same hours for the outdoor areas. It also lists live music, recorded and DJ music, karaoke and social gaming as possible entertainment.

According to New School Beer + Cider, the location would be pFriem’s third and its first in the city. The plans call for a covered front patio with heaters and a counter ordering window, a full bar pouring liquor and 12 taps, a small front seating room and a larger back room, and an insulated back patio for winter, with TVs throughout. The site sits between Hawthorne and Division, near Lincoln Street, and currently hosts five food carts: Matt’s BBQ Tacos, Thai Panther, Pizza Machine, Hunker Down and Indian Spice Kart. Hinterland was created by Ryan Schenk and Rowan Dunlap, and it’s not clear whether the carts or the current operators will stay.

pFriem was founded in 2012 in Hood River by brewer Josh Pfriem, a Northwest brewer who previously worked at Full Sail, and business partners Ken Whiteman and Rudy Kellner. Pfriem has described it as a family business. The brewery takes its name from Pfriem’s German heritage, and its beers draw on Belgian, German and Pacific Northwest traditions, with an emphasis on lagers. Its flagships are the pFriem IPA and the pFriem Pilsner, the brewery’s most awarded beer.

The company runs a brewhouse in Hood River, a production, packaging, barrel-aging and distribution facility in Cascade Locks and a full-service restaurant and bar in the historic old Milwaukie City Hall, which opened in 2025. Its beer is sold in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California. It was named best midsize brewery in the U.S. at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival, and at the 2025 festival it won a gold medal for its Italian Pilsner and a bronze for its Mosaic + Krush Cryo West Coast IPA.
