Five Guys Burgers & Fries could be bringing its made-to-order burger concept to downtown Raleigh, with preliminary development plans identifying 442 Fayetteville St. as the site of a potential new restaurant. The News & Observer reported October 28 that plans submitted to the city on October 19 outline renovations to prepare the space for the Virginia-founded chain.

Situated in downtown Raleigh’s City Plaza, the property is owned by Highwoods Properties Inc., with CBRE handling leasing for the building. According to the publication, the proposed work includes interior renovations and an extension at the rear of the building to accommodate a walk-in cooler and additional storage. The application was scheduled for review on November 4, although approval and a construction timeline have not been confirmed.

The proposed restaurant would bring a familiar burger destination to Fayetteville Street, with a menu built around customizable burgers, freshly prepared toppings and hand-cut fries. Five Guys’ official website describes its approach to preparing burgers to order, alongside a menu that includes hot dogs, sandwiches and hand-spun milkshakes. Customers can also choose a lettuce wrap instead of a traditional sesame seed bun.

The downtown proposal follows the brand’s recent arrival at Crabtree Valley Mall, where it took over a space previously occupied by McDonald’s, as previously reported by The News & Observer. The mall opening gives the company another foothold in Raleigh as it considers a location closer to the city’s downtown business and entertainment district.

No opening date or official confirmation has been announced for the Fayetteville Street project.
