Hawaii’s Matcha Café Maiko is expanding to Georgia.
Colin Su, the market’s franchisee, is opening the state’s first location in Duluth’s Gwinnett Place Shoppes, at 3500 Gwinnett Pl Dr. NW #15.
On the menu is soft-serve ice cream, frappes, lattes, tea, and more, all with matcha at its focus.
Matcha is a powder made from green tea leaves.
It is often dissolved in hot water to make tea or use as a flavoring.
The company gets its matcha from Harima Garden in Uji, Japan where the leaves have been grown for over 500 years.
Su is planning to open Matcha Café Maiko in spring 2019, assuming all goes well with permitting.
Including the forthcoming Duluth location, Matcha Café Maiko has at least 13 locations planned across the states and Canada.
Su did not immediately comment on future Georgia locations when reached by What Now Atlanta over the phone Tuesday.
I think it’s cool that matcha has a history that dates back centuries. It’s amazing that people have been enjoying it for so long.
