When Cristina Logg realized there was no bookstore in the immediate vicinity near her home, she decided to act. Logg will open bookstore cafe and bar Subtext in Downtown Atlanta at 342 Marietta St. NW, Unit 1. Logg told What Now Atlanta that they are aiming for an opening by the beginning of October.

Subtext will take shape in an early-1900s historic building with design touches such as brick and exposed piping. The 2,400-square-foot space will feature a cafe on the first floor and a bookstore and lounge space in the 1,4000-square-foot basement.

Logg is aiming to create a space with a slightly academic atmosphere reminiscent of some spots Logg used to visit in Boston, where she lived before moving to Atlanta. She is hoping to offset the excitement of Downtown Atlanta with a quieter space where people can relax, read and wind down.

“It’s really meant for you to be able to come with your partner and have a quiet conversation, or you can come alone and read a book,” Logg said. “You can come and play a game with friends if you want to.
It’s really a space meant to fulfill that quieter niche in the neighborhood.”

During the day, Subtext will serve coffee and light bites. At breakfast, the menu will feature bagels and pastries, and at lunch customers will be able to order handhelds and salads. In the late afternoon, the space will transition into a cocktail bar, serving beverages and charcuterie. Logg will place an emphasis on featuring local produce and food items at the cafe.

“We want something where people feel comfortable during the day coming in with their kids and meeting with book clubs and using it as a community space,” Logg said. “Then the evenings will be that quieter, contemplative space.”
