A longtime Mexican restaurant and bar, Sam Diego’s Mexican Cookery and Bar is preparing to close its doors. After more than four decades of service, the owners decided to shut down the restaurant. The owners tried to sell the business and pass it on to new owners, but were unable to find buyers.

Sam Diego’s Mexican Cookery and Bar, has been a community favorite spot for the Hyannis dining community for the last 44 years. The restaurant is well known for its vibrant, lively, and festive atmosphere and its Tex-Mex comfort food.
With a social media post, the restaurant owners shared the heartbreaking news of closure. The post stated that after over four decades of service, the restaurant has made the difficult decision to close on November 15, 2026.
The owners had spent the past two years trying to sell the business but were unable to find a buyer. “Unfortunately, this did not materialize, and the time has come for us to take this next step,” said the owners.
In the post, the owners thanked the community, customers, and loyal staff for the support over the decades. They added, “Thank you for being part of our Samily and for 44 years of unforgettable memories.”

Story Behind the Restaurant
Sam Diego’s has operated at 950 Iyannough Road in Hyannis since 1982. The menu offers Mexican and Tex-Mex selections, Southwestern specialties, barbecue, and various salads, signature sandwiches called SAMwiches, and combos.
The family-friendly restaurant space itself features Southwest-inspired warm colors with a wide variety of playful artwork and sculptures. It also includes an outdoor patio and two bar and lounge areas for a comfortable and relaxed dining experience.
In the closing announcement, the owners encouraged customers to visit before the restaurant closes. The owners also mentioned, “Please come in to: Redeem your outstanding gift certificates, Enjoy your favorite meal and Raise one last margarita with us.”
