A small group of local Mexican restaurants may soon expand further into the Merrimack Valley.

El Potro Mexican Bar & Grill is planning its fifth location in Methuen, although the deal has not yet been finalized. The new eatery would take over the former Margaritas Mexican Restaurant space at 90 Pleasant Valley St in The Loop shopping mall.

If the plan moves forward, the Methuen location would offer seating for 145 guests indoors and an additional 45 on the patio, according to a Facebook update from The Valley Dish.

Founded by Elias and Juana Interiano in 2006, El Potro has grown from its single Somerville site to additional locations in Malden, Lowell, and Chelsea. The restaurant is known for its traditional Mexican dishes, classic margaritas, and live mariachi performances.

Joe Carreiro, El Potro’s business manager, told What Now Boston that an opening date for the Methuen location will be announced once the lease is finalized and the necessary licenses secured.

In the meantime, Carreiro said that the Lowell location—which has been under construction for an expansion that included breaking through a wall to create more space—will celebrate its grand reopening on Tuesday, May 13 at 11 a.m. The renovation has doubled both the restaurant’s size and bar capacity.
