Babas, the family of Charleston cafes “inspired by the neighborhood cafés and bars of Europe,” has grown to include three locations: Babas on Cannon, Babas on Meeting, and Babas on Wentworth, whose opening What Now reported on in the spring of 2025.
Now, Babas is preparing to make a move, taking over the former Rodney Scott’s BBQ space at 1011 King St to create Babas on King.
“We are trying to get open this fall—earlier in the fall,” Babas co-owner Marie Stitt told What Now on Tuesday.
Babas on King will replace Babas on Meeting—although there is still time to visit Babas on Meeting, as Stitt says it will remain open until the end of September, after which there will be a short period of downtime preceding the opening at 1011 King. For Babas, taking over for Rodney Scott’s BBQ means a significant upgrade in space.
“It’s going to give us a lot more capacity. We have three locations, and this location will supply all our pastries. We’ve also really been growing our events and catering business, and we can grow that too.”
The new location will offer the same proven menus of espresso-based coffee drinks, fresh-squeezed juice, Plates like the Very Tall Quiche and the Turkey Club, caviar, and more. You’ll also find beer, wine, and a drinks list kept fresh with rotating cocktail choices.

“Our style has always been Old-World European-inspired,” said Stitt. “We love the vintage look, and French, Italian, and Spanish bars are always our inspiration—while maintaining the integrity of the building and honoring Charleston.”
Babas announced the transition in an Instagram post last week:
“For five years, Meeting Street has been where so many of you started your mornings, met friends and coworkers, celebrated milestones, and gave us the opportunity to show you what Babas hospitality is all about. We’re endlessly grateful for your overwhelming support.”
