A Greek-inspired food truck is getting ready to roll into neighborhoods across Charleston.
Alekos Greek Gyros is set to launch in June and, according to its Facebook page, is “the Greek food truck that will make your tastebuds do the Zorbas.” The Zorbas refers to a famous Greek dance made popular by the film Zorba the Greek.
Owner Alex Mouzakitis, who is Greek and Italian, has spent 20 years in the restaurant industry and lived in Greece for six of them. During his time abroad, he fell in love with the authentic country’s cuisine and set out to bring those flavors home by launching his own business.
Mouzakitis told What Now Charleston he’s most excited to share his passion for food — and the cuisine he grew up with — with the Charleston community, offering a chance for locals to broaden their culinary horizons.
One of the food truck’s highlights will be a pita sandwich filled with shaved lamb and beef, topped with cucumber yogurt sauce, onions, tomatoes and French fries. The menu will also feature shish kabobs marinated in Greek herbs and lemon juice. A nod to Mouzakitis’ New York roots, the truck will also serve a chopped cheese sandwich made with ground beef, onions, melted cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise on a sub roll.
Alekos Greek Gyros already has several events lined up, including a weekly spot at a Ridgeville farmers market every Saturday, a stop at the Woodlands on July 10, and a two-day festival in Mount Pleasant in September. The team is also working on plans to visit Myrtle Beach.
“Our mission is to please people,” Mouzakitis said. “We take care of people and everyone is welcome. We just want to serve hot, fresh food.”
The trailer aims to connect with the Charleston community across multiple areas, including Summerville, Johns Island and Knightsville.
