1920s-Style Speakeasy Coming to Downtown Wauconda This March

The village in Northwest Chicagoland will soon be home to a vintage speakeasy.

An underground speakeasy will take visitors back to the Prohibition days while enjoying a specialty cocktail.

Cellar 109 is a new lounge/tavern opening at 109 S Main Street in the building’s basement. The space will host both private events and lounge experiences. Co-Owner Lauren Cunliffe told What Now Chicago the opening date is set for March 5.

The concept comes from locals Cunliffe, Kayla Baggett and Michelle Sarrafi. The three friends are creating a space that harkens back to the 1920s with lounge seats, old photos and even a telephone booth. The inside will be dimly lit to keep with this theme.

“Tucked beneath the downtown, it honors the spirit of an era when connections mattered, conversations lingered and the best places weren’t always easy to find,” says the description on their website.

Cunliffe said initially the business will be primarily used for ticketed events and private rentals. In the future, the space will be accessible without an appointment or private event.

“Eventually, we will be open to the public,” Cunliffe said.

Cocktails on the menu will include their 109 Grasshopper, basically an elevated grasshopper, and a Vieux Carre with rye whiskey. Guests can expect other signature cocktails from the Prohibition era with a twist from the owners. Small bites will also be served, along with catering options.

The speakeasy will be accessible in the alley next to Honey Hill Coffee Company. Also close-by are At The Green Bench antique store, Daddyo’s Framing Music Memorabilia and The Grand Social House & Tavern across the street. The Grand Social House just recently opened downtown.
