A new family-owned cafe will be serving up specialty drinks and sandwiches in the northwest suburb.
From their social media, the owners of Hey Friends Cafe announced their new business is coming to 6050 W Irving Park Road in Portage Park. This is near Wilbur Wright College in the neighborhood. Co-owner Amanda Agosto told What Now Chicago she and her husband Victor are hoping to open the cafe by the end of May.
Amanda has had the idea of opening a cafe for a while, and when the two moved next door they became friends with the owner of BISTRO 6050. After the restaurant left, they decided to open their own cafe in the space. As renovations are happening, the owners are creating a cafe that is welcoming to families and will celebrate different cultures including Filipino, as Amanda is half-Filipino.
“I love creating experiences,” Amanda said.
A few specialty items on the menu will include coffees, sandwiches like peanut butter and jelly with raspberry lemonade jelly, along with hand-pies made by their long-time friend. Other pastries and drinks like tea will be served as well.
The cafe is being built in the heart of Portage Park, close to the Chicago Public Library Austin-Irving Branch. Perkolator Cafe is also nearby at the corner of N McVicker Avenue. This area is mostly residential, with a Jewel-Osco grocery store a few blocks west.
Hey Friends Cafe just recently posted a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for their cafe, with a goal of $20,000. They are hoping to receive donations for costs like equipment, licensing, inventory and staffing. Once they reach or get close to the goal, the team hopes to open.
